The content of fashion magazines is heavily reliant on pictures, and can make stars of not only the fashion designer who designs the clothes but also the model who shows them off and the photographer who takes the pictures. The relationship between the magazine, the designer, the model and the photographer is crucial. The status of these relationships can mean the difference between being a success or not.
Some magazines have special relationships with the top designers and will have exclusive rights to publicise their work. Some magazines will have a special relationship with the top fashion models. This relationship can be so successful that some models become famous in their own right and become known beyond the fashion industry. This fame allows models to move beyond the fashion industry, some of them moving into acting and the music industry. It has to be said that some of these moves are less than successful or indeed credible.
Not so much these days, but in the past, photographers that started working for fashion magazines became very famous indeed. These photographers then sought credibility and tried to break away from their fashion magazine roots by creating gritty photo-essays about the harsh realities of life around the world.
Fashion magazines provide a glamorous and affordable escape for their readers’ often humdrum lives and as such are an essential part of these readers’ lives.
